Spring Mindfulness Activities for Kids

Spring is a wonderful time to engage children in mindfulness activities that connect them with the new beginning of the season and the beauty that spring brings. Mindfulness should be practiced when kids are calm and ready to learn. Once they have practiced multiple times, it becomes easier to use mindfulness in times of need.

Here are some simple mindfulness practices that are perfect for spring and don’t take a lot of time:

1. Go on A Mindful Walk

Getting outside and getting fresh air and sunshine is a great way to relax the body and calm the mind. Go on a nature walk with your kids. Encourage them to use their senses to notice the sights, sounds, smells and textures of spring. Take your time on the walk, pausing occasionally to listen to sounds of birds or other animals. Pause to feel the warmth of the sun on their bodies. Look around and observe the blooming flowers and trees. Read more about Mindful walking here.

2. Sunshine Breath

Find a comfortable seated position outdoors where you can feel the warmth of the sun on your skin. Close your eyes and turn your face towards the sun, feeling its gentle rays enveloping you. As you inhale deeply, lift your arms up towards the sun and feel the bright, golden light of the sun on your body. Feel its warmth and energy filling you up from head to toe. Hold the breath for a moment, basking in the sunlight. Then, exhale slowly and completely, releasing any remaining tension or stress, and bringing your arms down simultaneously. You can find more details on this sun breath here.

3. Flower Breath

Sit or stand comfortably with your back straight. Imagine you’re holding a beautiful flower in your hands. As you inhale deeply through your nose, imagine smelling the sweet fragrance of the flower. Hold the breath for a moment, savoring the scent. Then, exhale slowly and gently through your mouth, as if you’re blowing away a gentle breeze. Repeat for several breaths, visualizing yourself surrounded by a field of blooming flowers. You can find more details on Flower Breath here, including voice recording you can play back to your kids.

4. BumbleBee Breath

Sit in a comfortable position. You can bring your hands behind your back, either clasping your hands, or holding on to your biceps.  Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe out, BUZZZ like a bumblebee. You can get more information on Bumblebee Breath here, including a voice recording of Bumblebee Breath you can play back to your kids.

6. Cloud Gazing Mindfulness:

Find a clean grassy spot and lay on your backs. Breathe in and out while looking at the clouds. Encourage children to observe the shapes and movements of the clouds without judgment, allowing their imaginations to wander freely. Guide them in mindful breathing as they relax and connect with the vastness of the sky.  Read more and find a simple and short cloud gazing meditation practice HERE.

7. Gratitude Practice:

Using spring as an inspiration, have children think of one thing they are grateful for in the spring. This could be the trees, sun, animals or plants. Then encourage them to draw a picture or make a piece of art surrounding the thing that they are the most grateful for.  Encourage them to focus on the process of creating art mindfully, paying attention to the colors, shapes, and textures they use. Discussing their art and gratitude for elements of spring is a great way to enhance mindfulness.
